Tardy

So two and a half weeks of mayhem and how did it all fare? Just scraped through. Many sleep deprived nights coupled with lack of responsibility has been the cause of most of the frustrations. And it doesn't quite end there. In attempt to get all my assignments in before 9:30am on Monday, I was really pushing the envelope quite a fair bit by trying to send it at 6 am. Guess what? Murphy decided to pay me a visit. The RMIT servers were not responding for a good half an hour. Given my sleep deprived state, I decided to get some shut-eye and try and wake up at 7 to try sending the assignments again. Operative word here is try. I ended up waking up at 11 am and doom and gloom just flooded me. If the lecturers were really strict about late assignments coming in at the end of the semester, they can just refuse to mark the assignment. Very painful when the assignments I sent in were 30-35%. I'm still very jittery about it and hopefully my mistake doesn't kill me later.

On a different note, I've been listening to this piece from a Malaysian jazz quartet (with the exception of the drummer). Thought it was a cool concept and *finally* a local jazz band that I like.

Without much to say over here except for the countless tabs of news opened, I'm just going to dump it all here now:
Masterchef seems to be rewriting the text book on television advertising

It seems that I've been doing it wrong as far as relationships goes, according to this. Speaking of which, apparently birth order is a compatibility factor. Interesting.

If we can't afford the Grange at the end of the year, at the very least we could have a $160 bottle beer

This is going to sound a lot like the beginnings of the Borg

Apparently fried rice in Penang is said to be one of the top 10 iconic meals according to Lonely Planet. How come my parents never bring me out for fried rice?

Some people don't like Masterchef for the drama especially the older generations. That said, I quite like the last line of the article on it.

We are getting ever closer to making a true quantum computer so that we can shrink computers down even more and be able to waste time more.

So generous of the hotel, and they are one happy couple.

This cannot end well for the education.

IBM security fail.

Some interesting statistics on divorce, in particular the last point.

Hey, it matters for our existence.

I wonder, why didn't he say anything when he was doing these films? Or even accepted the role in the first place? And why talk about it now long after the film has been shown.

TMI Kate. TMI.

After a great deal of thinking and listening, I somewhat agree to what this guy has to say. Kenny G is not really a jazz player.

Hard Presssed

Well, so far so good in the plan to conquer 4 massive assignments in the next 2 weeks. The real work however will only start to come somewhere in the middle of next week and it will be chaotic from then onwards. The good thing is that I won't really worry about the exams after that because I very much like how the timetable looks like. So basically I just need to stay alive in the next 2 weeks and I will be fine. Anyway, if all goes well, I will finish one of those assignments by the end of the week. Interestingly, that is the biggest assignment percentage of all the 4 assignments. No biggie, just write a literature report of 3000-5000 words.

Moar niuz:
Is this a Facebook CEO fail? On another note, since attending the Secure Programming Environments subject lectures, the one thing that has been hammered into our heads for the past 10 weeks is that building programs/applications should always consider security from the beginning and not as an afterthought. There's a few things Mr. Zuckerberg should learn in this subject.

For now, I'm under the Mickey Mouse Degree Club.

Cigarette butts to stop steel from rusting. Now I know virtually waste can be recycled.

I may love Apple products but I don't love them that much to sign myself up for a dating site specifically for Mac fans. Seriously.

"Can we be friends?" "Sure, after you pass the interview". Interesting article courtesy of Bing. Brings in a new light on one bad apple spoils the lot.

Speaking of friends, have you been talking to The Friend lately? I mean real heart-to-heart talk. I know I haven't.

It seems like everyone from Cupertino is making it big in the internet business, even those who haven't hit the big two-oh. Is it because Apple has this aura around them that makes people smart?

Now there is no excuse for infidelity. It can be done, science has said so. And God has said so.

I've yet to adopt this lifestyle. Or rather I've yet to come to this realization I'm not lacking, just have different stuff. For now, I still want.

That's it. I'm buying more white vinegar. Good for the house. And for poached eggs.

So apparently we are all born with a moral compass and not that we're a blank canvas. How can that not point to God?

Sometimes it is interesting to see what other atheists say about religion (aka. Christianity). Sometimes it's so absurd that it's funny and others really make you think about what you believe. This, unfortunately, falls on the former.

I now want to go to Gordon Ramsay's Maze. Seems to tick all the right boxes for foodies like me who don't have a lot of money on their hands.

Keeping Abreast

So yes, it has been awhile now. You can thank the rather massive hit of assignments that I've just had. Overall I managed to scrape through but I am just not really satisfied with some of the work that I've put in. That'll shake me up a bit in preparation of the "storm" that is going to come. I've now got 4 big assignments due on the last week of uni, one on Tuesday and three due on Friday. Yes, three! Seriously going to die soon man.

On the other hand, that trip to Wilson's Prom was a good trip. We've had such fantastic weather over the weekend we hardly thought it was fasting approaching winter (until night time hits us). Off on a tangent, the weather these days has been rather odd. It's now progressing through May and it's warmer than usual around here. Heck, even the trees that are supposed to shed their leaves for autumn hasn't really done so even until now. Anyway, we've had a lot of fun just chatting, walking and eating in the 2.5 day outing. One of the best part about the outing actually started out before the trip itself. A friend and myself were the cooks for the trip and we bought quite a lot and good range of stuff. When we actually got there we forgot a few but rather key ingredients for the dinners. So fail man the both of us.

So before I start to live like a hermit for the next 3 weeks, the news:
Interesting how just a small animal can build something that's visible from space. Oh dam!

This article really isn't helping me survive my massive assignment attack.

Anzac Day fail.

Perfect for the inner MacGyver in all photographers.

This will come in handy someday when I finally do a triple OS boot.

Cool but personally I'd rather have Homer Simpson doing the turn-by-turn. Because sometimes we really act stupidly on the road trying to get somewhere.

Are you prepared to shell out $200,000 for a medical degree? And that's not the price for international students. Crazy.

Adultery. How screwed up can we get?

What does your sleep position say about you?

Thought it was quite a funny in-your-face moment. Seriously, I thought the super conservative Christians are the only ones to say such things. If you see the video, there's one guy who held up a sign saying "God hates boobs" and quotes 1 Timothy 2:9-10. While I'm all up for modesty in dressing as said in 1 Timothy, it's something else to put stuff in God's mouth, let alone saying something that's not really there. Sometimes these people just never think before writing up their signs. Are you saying that when God created women and created them with breasts, that that is a serious design flaw? Or even more absurd, that boobs came up when sin just crept up on the human race and therefore God hates it? They keep saying read your Bible frequently with these signs but I highly doubt that they are reading it properly. Anyway, the following since the incident just basically says "SO, what's gonna happen now? Hmmmm?"

Speaking of which, seems that a certain cosmetic surgery is growing out of fashion and natural beauty (a term rather loosely defined, in my opinion) is a growing trend. I especially found the title in the second article funny, "Pardon me gorgeous but your cellulite is showing". Seems like more people are going for the no-airbrushed look these days which I think is a step in the right direction.

While I'm quite interested in what the study says, I have a hunch that it will be inconclusive. That would really suck, both for the researchers and the tax payers funding the research.

How healthy is your ocean? Check for whale excrement.

Apparently people want our badly roasted Malaysian coffee. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

It's been awhile since I've found this but I reserved it for some of my inspiration for couple shots. Needless to say that most of the ideas never really materialized mainly also because it turns out that the shoot I did wasn't in the right circumstance to use any of my ideas. Rats.

Apparently you can learn a lot from the outside world, locking yourself in a room with just Twitter as your contact to the outside. Sad? Maybe.

Tsunami

Well now, I think I have been procrastinating more than enough already. Have two rather large assignments that are due soon and I haven't even started. On top of that, there are the photos that I've taken recently that have yet to be processed and I'll be away over the weekend. This is only the onset of another big wave of assignments are soon to come. Seriously, I brought this upon myself. Again.

In the meantime, have some news for the week:
Kobe Bryant doesn't just get his superpowers from nowhere. He's got Superdad.

Would you want a $2 million dollar pair of speakers that weigh 5 tons? Or a $2.3 million dollar iPhone?

If a bomb blast doesn't kill you right there and then, your brain will.

This really sounds like something out of Harold and Kumar. Irony you say?

Drawing back to my experiences of being mugged twice since I've been here, I'm still trying to decide whether I think like a girl. Weird, I know.

I'd like to suggest that this article is flawed. You can be smarter from playing brain games. It's called the placebo effect. =P

Quite an interesting story (and video) of a pretty curious and somewhat playful octopus.

"Hellllll no!!! No volcano eruption is going to gatecrash my wedding!!", they said.

CS5 has been released. So why not see the evolution of the product while waiting for your copy?

Interesting though not entirely surprised by this article about the pressures of today.

I really like Penang. Not surprisingly because my parents were born there. But just when I've started liking my Hokkien roots and all the more eager to learn Hokkien about a decade late, we stop going there. I still love Penang.

"You suck!" "Well at least I'm not dying"

Who says we can't multitask? Just don't ask us to do more than 2 things at the same time because it's optimal.

Interesting how sexual liberalism promotes a funny kind idea of gender equality

I'll let the pictures do the talking again. One's from Belgrave and the other is a random assortment of events captured on film.

Unskilled Assassin

Monday, April 19, 2010 at 2:09 AM

So yesterday was an...interesting day. I was going to have a photo shoot that I've been thinking and planning for awhile now but silly me made some assumptions. Needless to say the assumptions blew up in my face. 3 hours before the shoot. And then realized that most of the things that I want to do don't work. Panic ensued. Though not many great/good/usable shots came out from the shoot, it was fun sprinkled with a little "Gah! I should have done this and that" moments. That's just inexperience talking. I'm thankful that the people listening to me ranting and panicking prior to the shoot have been rather supportive and that helped a lot. So now I actually feel like I want to redo the shoot only this time using the stuff that I've prepared for. But that will have to wait for another time. If there is another time. For the time being, this will have to suffice. Oh and I'm not going to upload them on Facebook. You're going to have to hunt me down first and ask nicely.

Sermon Fail

Thank goodness that really boring assignment was over. Normally I would be able to do assignments hours on end, trying to think of the solution and sometimes hours of coding and debugging but this bore me so much that I had to take a break every time I finish a small section. And you know what I'll be doing in my break? Play a variant of Sudoku. Sometimes I can be playing longer than the time it takes for me to complete that small section of the assignment. Well, I'm not really complaining since it was pretty straightforward, just that it just felt very trivial. The tutorial for the subject before the submission had me nearly break out in outrage. My tutor, after explaining to us the week's tutorial, concluded the class with this quote:
In this subject, it is not the clever and creative people who get the high marks. Those guys are artists and we are not artists and we don't want to be them. We are software engineers. Those who follow procedure and protocol are the ones who will get far in this area.

Right about then, every joke regarding engineers that I've heard finally make sense. The funny and perhaps disturbing thing about it was that he says it with such conviction, the kind you only see in rising/aspiring dictators. This type of behaviour has been burned in our brains from the word go in the education. While I agree that there are procedures and protocols that need to be followed, I think there is really no need to push creativity all the way back and label it as the not-smart-attribute. Felt very annoyed as I left the tutorial with the I-don't-need-this-shit look on my face.

Well anyway, now that that assignment is done, the real assignment for me begins. I'm trying and frantically trying to come up with ideas on a shoot that I'm going to try later this week. Manage to get some ideas around but having more ideas just makes me even more nervous about the whole thing. And of course, it is at a time where the tsunami of other assignments is about to hit me. I'm excited of course because I get to try my hand at something new in photography but the thing that is really being tested is my relational skills. Need to get them comfortable and not feel like there's a stalker around.

I was going to write some thoughts on the irrationality of grace but it seems that I needed more time articulating it. I've just spend a good hour writing it down here until at the very end I just realized that a small but valid issue cropped up and that might be a bit worrying to some. Fail. Oh well...

Now for the news:
Some churches totally missed the point and become very unloving till it gets ugly.

Singaporean schools and it's associated social climate has long been very interesting to me. Funny how in just one generation since its independence, all of this materialized.

So, racial bias (and can we extend it to the roots of racial discrimination?) is now because of genetics?

Interesting couple of blog posts of a photographer on being a professional and an amateur.

Is it time to change how we Asians discipline our children?

The wicked benefits from other wicked actions.

Atheists preparing their case to prosecute the Pope. All the more, we should be careful on how we live.

Would you be scared if your doctor is legitimately called Dr. Death?

Some interesting info about WWII weapons.

Apparently breaking up with a post-it note is so hard to do.

This would be so doggone cute.
